sexual harm prevention & response advisor (SHAPRA)
SoundCheck Aotearoa’s Sexual Harm Prevention and Response Advisor (SHAPRA) is a free and confidential service for people affected by sexual harm in Aotearoa’s music community. The purpose of the SHAPRA is to provide a safe channel for accessing independent professional advice.
The SHAPRA service is available to:
• anyone who has experienced harm
• concerned friends and whānau, bystanders, colleagues, and members of the public who have engaged with someone working in the music community
• businesses and workplaces responding to a situation
• businesses and workplaces seeking advice on how to prevent harm from occurring
• anyone who has done harm or is accused of harming someone.
No matter who you are and your situation, your privacy and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
The SHAPRA can provide:
• a safe channel for people to discuss their situation
• support
• information and resources
• advice and guidance about available options
• referrals to other services where appropriate
• advocacy where appropriate
• consultation and advice on creating safer spaces.
The SHAPRA can work with people to develop tailored approaches to specific situations.
Please note: the SHAPRA is not a complaints service but can provide advice on the channels available to make a complaint.
PRIVACY
If you share information with the SHAPRA, they will keep and manage that information in accordance with the Privacy Act 2020. In all cases, the SHAPRA will treat your information with sensitivity and respect, and will talk with you about your privacy and confidentiality of information.
You can provide the SHAPRA with as much or as little information as you feel comfortable with. If you wish to make anonymous contact with the SHAPRA, please call the SHAPRA on 021 222 9169.

The SHAPRA operates on a part-time basis within regular business hours of 9-5pm, Mon-Fri, therefore is not available to respond on a 24/7 basis. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 111 for emergency services. Where suitable we can work in with organizations like MusicHelps to provide the support and information that you need.

No, you are welcome to talk to the SHAPRA about a variety of situations or the same situation as many times as you need to.

The SHAPRA can provide support in a range of ways, and in some cases can act as an advocate. The SHAPRA will work with you to develop a tailored solution to meet the specific needs of your situation, to enhance your safety in your workplace.

Yes, the SHAPRA can work with people who have done harm or been accused of harm to increase the safety of everyone involved. They can work with people to develop tailored solutions and provide support to respond to the ripple out into families and communities and link with any services if needed. You are welcome to speak anonymously with the SHAPRA about your situation and read our privacy statement for information about confidentiality.

Yes, you are welcome to contact the SHAPRA to discuss your situation. You can share as much or as little as you want to with the SHAPRA, and can end contact at any stage. You are in control of the process and there is no pressure for you to do anything that you don’t want to. The SHAPRA is there to provide a safe space for you to discuss and process what’s been going on.
If the SHAPRA has your contact details, they may send you a follow up note as agreed, sometime after your contact to see if you need any more support. You are welcome to ignore or respond as you wish.
